Bonding and Bridging Social Capital in Multicultural CommunitiesQun Chen. Some social capital theorists have proposed two types of social capital, bonding and bridging social capital. Bonding social capital refers to the bonding aspect of social capital, such as social control. It is associated with strong ties in a closed social structure. Bridging social capital refers to the aspect of social capital that emphasizes members as social actors, tolerance of difference, etc. It is usually associated with the openness of social structures. Bonding It is argued that it is possible to be high on both bonding and bridging social capital, which is actually considered good for democracy. This paper applies the two concepts in studies of culturally heterogeneous communities, and tries to find out how they are associated with immigrants' levels of acculturation and ethnic identification.
