Attitudes of Tolerance for the Accommodation of Diversity at the Military AcademyNyameka Mankayi. South Africa is still a developing and transforming country whose progress in socio-economic factors was hampered by apartheid. Its democratic elections took place in 1994. It is at least expected by now (after 9 years) that individuals entering the world of work or higher education have been exposed to multicultural interaction. The intent of this paper is to explore attitudes of tolerance for the accommodation of diversity at the Military Academy (MA). The Military Academy (MA) is a Faculty of Military Science of the University of Stellenbosch. It provides university education and professional military development for selected military officers of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). At completion of their studies they return to their line function in the SANDF.
The study will be an empirical survey study with the aim to generalize results to a larger population from which the sample was chosen. About 60 students will complete the Cultural Orientation and Awareness Test. Items included in the test are designed to measure for example interracial attitudes and tolerance for diversity. The responses on the questionnaires will be quantitative in nature. To analyse data statistical methods such as factor analysis, multiple regression and correlational techniques will be employed.
