An Assessment of the Objectification of Women in Fitness Magazines

Prof. Sung Kim, Sonia Fitzpatrick, Elizabeth Hunter, Sarah Huegen, Joe Thompson.

Existing theoretical research on the social construction of the feminine physique and the objectification theory helps us understand how women exist in a society that causes them to objectify themselves. The primary focus of existing quantitative research has been on mediated image in movies, fashion magazines, and on television, and the eating disorders many women develop in an effort to possess the thin bodies that the media tells them they want. But with the change in the ideal body from a thin, gaunt figure, to a sharply, muscle-toned body, it is necessary to look at the mediated images present in fitness magazines. Using the objectification theory, this study will analyze fitness magazines content to determine if or how they contribute to the media's objectification of women.
