After Infinite Justice: Australia, the Media and Global Terror

Dr Jeff Lewis, Dr Belinda Lewis.

It is frequently asked: Has the current government’s adherence to American foreign policy over terrorism and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, exposed Australia to a greater level of terrorist threat? Since terrorism is fundamentally a communicational act, this question can only be answered fully by a more direct investigation of the role of the media in terrorism, political violence and the cultural conditions of threat.
The media is driven by significant semiotic, ideological and financial deficits. The representation of terrorism and political violence is characterized by these underlying deficits and by the ‘language wars’ that define history and culture.
