Community Diversity in the Face of Sexual Abuse By Clergymen: An Israeli CaseProf. Haya Itzhaky, Dr Alan York. This paper presents a number of cases of sexual abuse, one on a woman and the others on adolescent girls, by a teacher in a religious school, who was an ordained rabbi. These cases took place in a small town in Israel, inhabited by a strong, homogeneous population, mainly traditional or religious in nature. It shows how the local social worker used community resources to give social support to the victims, to encourage other victims to come forward, and, eventually, to bring about the dismissal and prosecution of the offender. The social worker used a community-based intervention, and she widely involved community residents, leaders and service providers, as well as some extra-community resources. The generalizeability of the case and its means of intervention are discussed as well as its applicability to other communities. The question of the nature of the community and its similarity to or diversity from other communities of this kind is discussed in the framework of community diversity and its applications.
