Cultural Competence as a Key to Successful Business Partnership: The Chinese CaseDr Alex Leung, Dr Christine Kwan. In today’s globalized, diverse environment, cultural competence is a key to establishing and maintaining successful cross-national business partnership. In the case of partnership with Chinese businesses in Asia, it has become very helpful, if not necessary, for "western" companies to understand and be knowledgeable in Chinese corporate culture and practices. For example, relative to executives in western companies, business executives in Chinese companies are more inclined to observe the already-established power hierarchy and to place a premium on interpersonal connections and harmony. Being sensitive to such differences and targeting common goals across companies can help minimize misunderstanding and conflicts, overcome philosophical and communication barriers, and increase workforce productivity, thereby leading to a better chance in achieving a company’s cross-national business objectives.
To explicate the above notion, this presentation will discuss (1) the prevailing practices of Chinese businesses and their executives, including culturally-appropriate vs. inappropriate organization-level practices such as leadership and management styles, as well as person-level practices such as interpersonal behaviors, attitudes and emotions; (2) the cultural assumptions underlying these practices; and (3) ways for western executives to develop the cross-cultural skills to successfully establish and maintain business partnership with Chinese companies.
