A Campuswide Model for Supporting Untenured Faculty Including Women and Minorities: Strategies, Recommendations and CaveatsDr. Ellen Junn, Dr Margaret Atwell. This workshop introduces participants to a comprehensive campuswide strategic model for more effectively supporting tenure-track faculty with a special focus on assisting women and minority faculty. The workshop will present information on a variety of important phases and issues for this effort including:
(1) establishment of clear, high-level leadership; (2) formation of a campuswide committee of well respected faculty and administrators; (3) compilation and discussion of current research and writings on the issue of recruiting and retaining women and minority faculty; (4) collection of campus and national comparison data; (5) creation, administration and analysis of a survey of untenured faculty; (6) compilation and dissemination of the committee's report and specific recommendations along four dimensions (i.e., supporting individual faculty, improving the tenure process, improving student understanding, improving campus institutional support and infrastructure); (7) implementation of the committee's comprehensive set of recommendations; (8) discussion of caveats and next steps. Attendees will participate in discussing, evaluating, and brainstorming the various strategies and have the opportunity to share similar successes and challenges from their own campuses. Associate Dean College of Human Development and Community Service California State University, Fullerton Dr. Ellen Junn, Associate Dean of the College of Human Development and Community Service at California State University, Fullerton, earned her B.S. from the University of Michigan and M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University. Her research and publications include college teaching effectiveness, faculty development, and diversity issues. She served as the chair of the campus’ Committee to Support Untenured Faculty and Diversity charged to study and make recommendations on how to more effectively support untenured faculty with a special focus on women and minority faculty.

As a Senior Administrator with primary responsibility for academic personnel, she spends her time on faculty matters such as
recruitment and retention, orientation and faculty support and faculty employee relations. Her academic interests include literacy development and assessment, teacher preparation and children's and adolescent literature.
